چکیده

This paper explores the link between status-seeking and the exploitation of a common-property exhaustible resource. The extracted resource is an input in the production of a final good. The other input is man-made capital, which is a second state variable. Extraction requires efforts. Economic agents derive utility not only from absolute consumption, but also from relative consumption, because the latter is a signal of relative status. We consider a differential game involving n infinitely-lived agents. We compare the Markov-perfect Nash equilibrium of this game with the outcome under cooperation. We find that the degree of status-consciousness has important impact on the Markov-perfect Nash equilibrium. A higher degree of statusconsciousness leads to greater excessive consumption, and lower capital accumulation. If extraction is costless, status-consciousness has no impact on the extraction/resource-stock ratio. However, with costly extraction, higher status-consciousness reduces this ratio.

Games and Resources

This chapter presents a sequence of simple and related models to analyze the strategic use of natural resources. Game theory is the natural tool for such an analysis, whether the resource is private or publicly owned, whether it is renewable or exhaustible, whether the game is static or dynamic, and whether or not the users can strategically invest in technologies. Equilibrium extraction is too...

Forward trading in exhaustible-resource oligopoly

We analyze oligopolistic exhaustible-resource depletion when firms can trade forward contracts on deliveries, a market structure prevalent in most resource commodity markets. When market interactions become arbitrarily frequent, all stocks are contracted and subgame-perfect equilibrium allocation becomes perfectly competitive. The result is in contrast with the idea that forward markets can hel...

Exploration and Exhaustibility in Dynamic Cournot Games

We study the stochastic effect of resource exploration in dynamic Cournot models of exhaustible resources, such as oil. We first treat the case of a monopolist who may undertake costly exploration to replenish his diminishing reserves. We then consider a stochastic game between such an exhaustible producer and a “green” producer that has access to an inexhaustible but relatively expensive sourc...

Investigating the method of achieving technology upstream of Iran's oil and gas industry using game theory in two modes of cooperation (transfer) and non-cooperation (independence)

Access to technology in the upstream oil and gas industry is one of the most challenging issues. In this industry, in order to be able to apply the desired effects of technology in the economic and development dimension, in the decision-making process, the choice to acquire technology must be such as to avoid repeating the ineffective approaches of the past. However, the most divisive And expli...

Sustainability and Substitution of Exhaustible Natural Resources How Resource Prices Affect Long-term R&d-investments Sustainability and Substitution of Exhaustible Natural Resources How Resource Prices Affect Long-term R&d-investments

Traditional resource economics has been criticised for assuming too high elasticities of substitution, not observing material balance principles and relying too much on planner solutions to obtain long-term growth. By analysing a multi-sector R&Dbased endogenous growth model with exhaustible natural resources, labour, knowledge, and physical capital as inputs, the present paper addresses this c...
